🗓️ Calendar Reminder: Labor Day

Friday, August 30, and Monday, September 2, are holidays for all FCPS employees and students in honor of Labor Day.

Virginia legislation requires that schools opening prior to Labor Day must be closed the Friday immediately preceding Labor Day. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends.

See the complete school year calendar.

Overdose Awareness Day

August 31 is Overdose Awareness Day. There are three things you can do now to support student wellness and increase understanding of the dangers of opioids and fentanyl:

  • Safely store and dispose of medications, including prescription pain medications, to prevent drug misuse.
  • Sign up for a Virtual REVIVE! training class to learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of opioid overdose and administer naloxone nasal spray to reverse an opioid overdose.

Learn more about the dangers of opioids and available resources on our website. Visit the Student Safety and Wellness webpage for more information on topics related to student well-being.

STUDENT SERVICES Social-Emotional Learning Screener

On October 22nd (make up date of October 28th) during 4th period advisory classes all students will participate in a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener unless opted out by a parent or guardian. Opt Outs can be completed through ParentVue. If you have submitted a paper opt out form, it has been filed and your student will be exempt from the SEL Screener. If you would still like to opt your student out and have not done so yet, please contact John Basta at [email protected]

The SEL Screener elevates the voices of our students by making sure their perspectives are considered in decision-making. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students. Division and school level results, which do not include individual student information, may be used by staff to improve SEL and mental wellness practices and to inform strategic plans. Division and school level results may also be shared with the community to describe the needs of our student body and provide opportunities for partnership.

PTSA Join the PTSA

The PTSA is back and we would love to you have you join us as we prepare to support our school.

  • I joined this past spring.  Do I need to join again?  Yes.  Our membership year lasts from July 1 - June 30, so if you haven't joined for the current year in the last few weeks, please join for this year!
  • Why should I join This is our school.  We can keep it a great school by doing our part, or we can hope others do it for us.  Be part of the people doing their part, and help support an organization that advocates for our children and schools!  See our list of other reasons at https://wshsptsa.net/join/membership/
  • If I join, will I be asked to do things?  You can just pay your dues and not do anything else if you want.  Totally up to you.  We'll share volunteer opportunities and opportunities for donations to teacher appreciation and other events, but joining doesn't commit you to doing anything else.  The most important step is joining.  I hear too often "I didn't join because I don't have time to do things." Don't let that stop you.  If that's the case, we're happy to just take your financial support-- we'll put it to good use!
  • What's new with the PTSA this year?
    • Parent socials
    • We're hoping to get help to have WSHS participate in the PTA's Reflections art contest
    • Community-building projects
    • Other ideas?  Join and let us know.  We can build together!
New PTSA officers elected for the 2024-2025 year:

During our June membership meeting, the following people were elected at PTSA officers

We are looking for volunteers to serve as committee chairs:

Here is the list of committee chair positions where we could use help:

  • Teacher & Staff Appreciation
  • Membership
  • Community Education
  • Restaurant Night Coordinator (co-chair)
  • Reflections Art Program

General descriptions are available at https://wshsptsa.net/about/committee/

None of these roles require large time commitments, and most only require action during short time periods (for example: teacher appreciation is generally focused on a couple of events at the beginning of the school year and in the spring). We are open to co-chairs, so if you’re worried about taking on the responsibility alone please let us know and we can try to find someone to share the responsibilities. Or ask a friend!

If you are interested in finding out how you can help with the PTSA, please e-mail us at [email protected]

It’s fine if you’re not sure of which ones: we can talk and find the right one for you.

SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES Girls Basketball Interest Meeting

There will be a Girls Basketball Interest Meeting after school on Tuesday, September 3rd in Room 2223.  It's for all girls wanting to tryout for the team in November.  We will also give out workout and conditioning days for the fall.

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms are available in Parent Digital Consent.  Paper opt-out forms are available from your child’s school.  Students receiving special education services and accessing modified curriculum will receive a printed opt-out form for modified FLE lessons.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in Schoology.  Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the City of Fairfax Regional Library (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at WSHS or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by email to [email protected]

Health and Physical Education Program- 9th and 10th graders

Thank you to those who are participating in our Health and Physical Education program this upcoming school year!  The HPE Department is looking forward to a great 2024-25 school year.  As we approach the beginning of the school year, we are reaching out to get your support.  We have listed a few policies that will help us provide a safe and healthy learning environment for all students at West Springfield High School.

  • Dressing out: Students must wear a gray shirt and blue or black shorts. Students must wear sneakers or running shoes to safely participate. Students' participation in class activities can be limited due to improper clothing which can affect their grade. Students can bring a sweatshirt or sweatpants to put on when it is cold.  Students are encouraged to wear the PE uniform and you can purchase one using the ordering using the link below.  The store closes on August 27th.

PE Uniform Ordering Link:  My Team Shop (bsnteamsports.com)

  1.           PE Locker Rooms & Backpacks (new policy this year) : All students have access to PE locker rooms where they can dress out and store personal items.  Backpacks will be permitted in the locker rooms this year.  All ninth-grade students will be assigned a PE locker and will need to remember their combinations. Tenth grade students will bring their own combination lock and will remove it after class each day.  Locks left on after class will be removed.  Students must put all backpacks and personal belongings in their PE locker prior to coming to the gyms for attendance.

Please remind students to lock up their personal belongings. FCPS teachers and staff are not responsible for students’ personal items.

  1.           Phones: Students are not permitted to have cell phones in PE.  Phones are not permitted to be out while in the locker rooms.  Phones must be put in bags before entering the locker room.

We appreciate your support as we begin the 2024-25 school year.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email Jennifer Davies, Department Chair for HPE, at [email protected]

Schedule Request Policy

We are excited to have your students joining us for the 24-25 School Year.

All schedules will be live the morning of August 15th in ParentVue and StudentVue.

Our schedule request policy is below:

  • Week 1 – Corrections only for too few or too many classes, incorrect grade level placement, absence of required courses, and incorrect course listed.
  • Weeks 2-4 – If space is available for elective changes and moving up a level to Honors or AP.  These types of requests will not be considered after week 4 of school as students will have missed too much content.
  • Weeks 5-6 – No schedule change requests.
  • Week 7 – until the end of second quarter – level down changes for students to move out of AP, Dual Enrollment, and Honors courses.

Please note that students will remain in their AP, DE, and/or Honors course until the end of September if they choose to start the year in those courses.  We want to give students time to challenge themselves and receive support before they consider dropping down a level.

  • Any courses dropped after the second quarter will receive a Withdraw Pass or Withdraw Fail on their transcript – this will not impact the GPA in accordance with FCPS policy.

Still Need to Turn in Forms?

FCPS is offering a new online option where parents can easily update their child’s information. The Online Verification Update packet or OVU will allow parents to review and update phone numbers, emergency contacts and health information (such as health conditions and immunizations) for students. Enrolling parents will be able to access OVU through their SIS ParentVUE account (See SIS ParentVUE information below).

Parents must have an active SIS ParentVUE Account to access and complete the OVU packet

Required Forms
  • Update your student’s Emergency Care information in SIS ParentVue if anything has changed.
    • To update your contact information in ParentVUE, click the “Online Packets” tab in the upper right of the screen, then select the “Online Verification/Update” form in the drop down menu. Click “Begin Packet.”

    • Parents who do not have a SIS ParentVUE account continue to have the option to communicate updates via the normal paper process. You can also print and complete a blank Emergency Care Information Form needed for updates and submit it to your sub school Admin Assistant in the Main Office.

    • Some of the digital resources your child may use this year require parental consent. Read more, LOG into SIS, and submit your consent application HERE

Bus Schedules

Transportation assignments for eligible bus riders should be visible in the “Student Info” tab in both StudentVUE and ParentVUE.

Transportation Patience and Safety: Thank you for your patience (in advance!) as we all get used to new routines this school year. We also appreciate our kiss-n-ride families following the School Traffic Pattern (see below).

If a student’s bus is delayed, parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays.

To make sure you receive email messages about bus delays, update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE.

School Traffic Pattern

For those new to the WSHS or returning, please familiarize yourself with the traffic pattern map below for drop offs, pick ups, and parking.  Also, please be mindful not to block neighborhood driveways.

  • Students (seniors) with approved parking permits should entire through the Tuttle Road entrance or Grisby Drive entrance.
  • Parents dropping off students in kiss-n-ride must enter through the Grigsby Drive entrance.
  • NOTE: We will disallow parents to drop off students at the Tuttle Road entrance.
Lockers

Locker assignments will be assigned next week. When assigned, the locker assignments (location and combination) should be visible in the "Student Info" tab of SIS StudentVue and SIS ParentVue. Freshmen and Sophomores are automatically assigned lockers.

Communication and Online Resources

Registering for SIS ParentVUE / SIS StudentVue

The Student Information System (SIS) ParentVUE Account  is the FCPS secure solution for accessing information about your student's attendance, class performance, demographic data, and link to Schoology. It provides an additional conduit for communication with our school.

Customized for Elementary, Middle, and High School students, your SIS ParentVUE Account login credentials can also be used to access Schoology.

Instructions for getting the ParentVue Mobile App.

To request support for ParentVue, use the Parent Support Request form.

For information about registering for an account, visit this SIS ParentVue Account Registration on the FCPS webpage. If you do not have an Activation Code, please submit a Parent Support Request ticket to receive an Activation Code via email.

What Is Schoology?

Teachers use Schoology to post their classroom materials online; to provide a secure forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects; and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized and it keeps the class connected.

A Schoology Parent Account gives you access to:

  • Your child’s classes.
  • Your child’s upcoming assignments.
  • School, class, and group announcements.

Parent accounts will be available after August 19. To access Schoology, parents will need to have an active SIS/ParentVUE accountMore information on how to login and use Schoology is available online.

TalkingPoints

Many of our staff and faculty will utilize Talking Points to communicate with parents/guardians this year about your student's education and progress. TalkingPoints is an easy and safe way families can communicate in their home languages with their child’s teachers for free. This platform is being used across FCPS. Learn more about TalkingPoints and how you can download the app HERE.
