National History Day
West Springfield had seven students participate in the National History Day national competition in College Park, Maryland June 10-14. Each of these students placed 1st or 2nd at the Virginia History Day competition in April, after progressing from the District competition in March, and the school competition February. They began working on these projects in September, so competing at Nationals was a great way to end the school year!
Yuni Choi received an Honorable Mention award, placing second in her qualifying round. Her Individual Documentary, “The 1953 Armistice Agreement: The Ongoing Compromise”, impressed the judges with how well she made connections to current events, and even included footage she added the morning of the competition so that she was up to date on the current news!
West Springfield was very well represented at the competition, with projects in multiple categories. Kayla Rothstein competed in Individual Performance, Amy Herrema competed in Individual Exhibit, Fikir Mekonnen competed in Individual Website, and Hannah Capra, Yumi Kim, and Jordan Buechler competed with a Group Performance.
With over 3500 students participating from around the world, and over a hundred entries in each category, each having previously receiving top awards from their state affiliate, it is very competitive so Yuni receiving 2nd place in her qualifying round is extremely impressive! Congratulations to Yuni and to all West Springfield students who participated!
