West Springfield High School Shines at DCDT Conference
A group of students from West Springfield High School (WSHS) made a strong impression at the international Division on Career Development and Transition (DCDT) conference that was held in Chantilly, Virginia this year. These students showcased their entrepreneurial spirit by selling handmade items from WSHS Original Creations, a student-run business that offers meaningful application of vocational training and life skills.
The students in the Education for Employment class crafted an array of products including homemade dog treats and beautifully designed greeting cards. They also sold items made by students in the low incidence program. Among the standout items were the popular crayon letters, which drew significant interest from conference attendees. The clever design allowed customers to spell out words, but when the letter "A" ran out halfway through the day, attendees enthusiastically engaged in a challenge to create words without it. Participating in the conference provided these students with invaluable real-world experience. They learned essential skills in product creation, advertising, sales, and customer service.
The DCDT conference, which takes place in various locations across the country, provided a unique opportunity for WSHS students to engage with a wider audience. WSHS students actively participated in this prominent event, further bridging the gap between education and real-world application. A WSHS student in the Professional Photo Studio class at Fairfax Academy came to the conference and photographed some of the attendees as well.
In addition to the student business venture, WSHS Employment and Transition Representative Rasha Abulohom co-presented at the conference. The session titled "Empowering Student Voices: Self-Determination and Middle School Transition Planning " resonated deeply with attendees, adding to the school’s representation at the event. Abulohom's insights into the importance of determination in overcoming challenges in the workplace were met with enthusiasm, emphasizing the support and guidance available to students as they prepare for their futures.
