Parents of homeschooled students should contact our assessment coach, Laura Fitzsimmons ([email protected]) to register.

When/where is the SAT School Day test?

The SAT School Day test will be given on October 9th at West Springfield High School during the school day.  Students will be notified of their testing location by email (fcpsschools.net accounts).  Encourage your child to check for updates through their school emails.

Please note that FCPS has designated October 9th as a 2-hour early release day for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. 9th grade students will not attend school on this day.

FCPS transportation will be available to all students, as well as breakfast and lunch. Students who have extended-time accommodations on the PSAT or SAT will be offered late transportation.

How long is the test?

The Digital SAT has two sections - a combined Reading and Writing section followed by a Math section.

  • Reading and Writing - 54 questions/tasks
    • 64 total minutes (divided into two 32-minute modules)
  • Math - 44 questions/tasks
    • 70 total minutes (divided into two 35-minute modules)

Please note that students who have been approved by College Board for extended time will be required to use all of the time they have been allotted, even if they finish the section early. The time is built into the digital platform and cannot be controlled by the proctor.

What should my student bring to school for the SAT School Day test?

Since the SAT is now a digital exam, students MUST bring the following:

  • Fully charged FCPS-issued Chromebook. Students may NOT use a personal device to take the digital PSAT on this date. If your student has not checked out a Chromebook this year a loaner will be provided. If your student FORGETS their Chromebook, a loaner will only be provided if supplies are available.
  • Laptop charger
  • A pencil or pen

The following are additional items students MAY bring:

  • External mouse
  • Approved calculator (The digital SAT has the Desmos graphing calculator built into the exam, so students do not need to bring their own, but may if they feel more comfortable using a handheld calculator)
  • Snack or a drink for the break

Please note that West Springfield High School will not supply calculators on test day.

What is prohibited from testing?

You may NOT bring any electronic “smart” device such as a cell phone, laptop, or wearable technology like a Smart Watch or Fitbit. Students may not wear headphones, Airpods, or earplugs, unless approved for a "noise-cancelling" accommodation by College Board.

Students found in possession of their cell phone during the SAT will be reported to College Board for a security violation and their score will be cancelled. A retake or makeup will not be offered.

Please leave these items fully turned off in your backpack, in your car, or at home. Proctors will also offer to hold on to devices before the test begins.

Is food allowed?

Fairfax County will be providing a grab and go breakfast and lunch option for all students. Snacks are allowed to be eaten during scheduled breaks. We request that snacks are nut-free and carried in a clear Ziploc bag.

How can my student prepare for the SAT School Day?

The SAT School Day Student Guide, which include a practice test, is linked above.  Additionally, all FCPS student have access to Tutor.com and Khan Academy’s free online test preparation. Tutor.com is accessible via Schoology and provides live tutoring services, including SAT preparation. Please note that Khan Academy will allow students to download practice tests without having to create an account. When accessing the customized curriculum, students will need to create an account which requires parent/guardian permission. The Khan Academy website also offers test prep resources for students. Additional information about the SAT can be found on College Board’s website.

How can my student apply for testing accommodations for the SAT?

Students with disabilities and English learners may be eligible for testing accommodations and/or supports for the SAT School Day; however, the College Board requires schools to submit formal requests in advance.

  • Students with disabilities who have testing accommodations documented in a 504 Plan or an individualized education program (IEP) may be eligible for testing accommodations on the SAT School Day. The College Board must approve a formal request for each student. If the student already has College Board accommodations approved from a previous  PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, SAT, or AP test, then no further action is needed. Once instated, accommodations remain in place for all College Board testing. The Accommodations Process for College Board Testing web page provides instructions for requesting College Board testing accommodations, including the required input and consent forms (Enclosures 2-3).
  • English learners (ELs), as defined by state and federal policy, are eligible for testing supports for the SAT School Day. EL supports are temporary and can only be used on the test date for which they have been requested. The EL Supports Process for College Board Testing web page provides instructions for requesting EL testing supports, including the required input and consent forms (Enclosures 5-6).

To request new or amended College Board testing accommodations and/or to request SAT School Day EL supports, return the related input and consent forms to the school by August 5, 2024.When returning forms, deliver to:

When will my student receive SAT School Day scores?

Most scores for the SAT School Day will be available online to students through their free College Board accounts around November 2, 2023. Students can view scores via College Board at https://studentscores.collegeboard.org/home.  Students who do not currently have a College Board account will need to create one to view scores.

WSHS will not send scores to students or parents when they become available, so students should make sure that they can log in to their College Board account and that all personal information is up to date.

Please note that students applying "early decision/action" to a college or university should NOT PLAN ON RECEIVING THEIR SCORES in time for a November 1st deadline. Please plan to take the SAT in an earlier weekend administration to ensure that you have scores to include in your application if necessary.

I have a question that is not listed above – who should I contact?

Please contact our assessment coach, Laura Fitzsimmons ([email protected]) for more information regarding the SAT.
