NEWS AND NOTES Principal Mike Mukai Accepts Principal Position at Alma Mater Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
January 9, 2025
Dear Spartan Family,
As I reflect on the incredible journey we have shared over the past ten years at West Springfield High School, I am filled with immense gratitude and pride. Today, I am writing to share that I have accepted the principal position at my alma mater, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, and will begin this new chapter later this month.
My time at West Springfield has been a cornerstone of my personal and professional growth. The dedication of our faculty, staff, and students has inspired me every day. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones: navigating the challenges of a school renovation, persevering through the pandemic, and embodying the resilience and spirit of being Spartan Strong.
It has been my honor to witness extraordinary moments, from Virginia Music Educators Association and White House performances to Cappies-winning musicals and numerous Virginia High School League district, region, and state championships. Most significantly, I’ve cherished shaking hands with over 5,000 Spartan graduates as they crossed the stage at commencement, ready to embrace their futures.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege to watch our students grow into successful young adults and welcome back alumni who shared how their time at West Springfield High School prepared them for their accomplishments. My journey here—as a chemistry teacher, math teacher, wrestling coach, assistant director of student activities, assistant principal, and principal—has shaped me into the educator I am today. Each role has been a testament to the incredible community we have built together.
As I prepare to return to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, I carry with me the lessons, memories, and relationships that have enriched my time at West Springfield. While I am excited to serve my alma mater, I will always cherish my time here and the indelible mark West Springfield High School has left on my heart.
I know that West Springfield High School will continue to transform lives and foster a legacy of excellence. Thank you for allowing me to be part of this extraordinary family.
Dream Big, Work Hard, Be Proud.
Spartan Strong,
Michael Mukai
