Growing Your Career Fair

Students from West Springfield recently had the opportunity to participate in the Fort Belvoir Growing Your Career Fair, hosted at the National Museum of the Army. The event was a networking career and education fair offering transitioning service for military members, military spouses dependents, and veterans, giving participants the opportunity to connect with career enhancement programs, certification programs, employer sponsored internships, fellowships and degree programs.

Enrique (Kiki) Camarena was a Mexican-American man working for the DEA after serving in the Marine Corps, being a fireman, police officer, and deputy sheriff in California. While on assignment in Mexico for four years, he was on the trail of the country’s biggest marijuana and cocaine traffickers. He was getting close to exposing a multi-billion dollar drug pipeline in 1985, until he was kidnapped that February. He was headed to lunch with his wife when he was last seen being thrown into a van by masked men, his body wasn’t discovered until a month later.
A Quick Peep into the Roaring 20’s

WSHS 11th grade students in WSHS teacher Jeri Clark’s US/VA History classes dove into learning about the Roaring 20’s hands and peep first, creating their own marshmallow Peep 1920’s-themed dioramas. Charlie Chaplin and silent movies, Flappers fashion, jazz, Knute Rockne and the Fighting Irish, family life and The Great Gatsby are among the topics student chose to portray. Now on display in the school library.
